Growing up in the UK, Tyler Brooks, aka Skaiwater always heard music around the house but it wasn’t until their song “Miles” went viral on Tiktok that they realized that it could be a career for them. After gaining thousands of listeners across streaming platforms, Skaiwater began to travel around the world working with various artists. The 22 year old artist went on to tour with Lil Nas X and collaborate with individuals like Lil Uzi Vert and others. Staff writer, Ella Edwards sat down with the ever so talented Skaiwater to talk about their rise to fame.

Ella Edwards: Ok so tell our readers about you!

Skaiwater: Im Skaiwater, I’m from the UK, about three hours away from London. I’ve been making projects from my room for as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to music in my house, with my dad playing it from the kitchen or around our home.

EE: Do you remember the first record you heard?

SW: Geez. I dont know. I remember the first song I bought on Itunes was like Forever by Drake.

EE: Ah, good song. All old Drake is the best Drake in my opinion.

SW: Um, yeah. True.

EE: What did music mean to you growing up?

SW: I think because I heard it when I was around my family, I associate it with community and home.

EE: When do you think you decided you wanted to take music seriously?

SW: I think at the end of 2018 when I started coming to New York more and building a community I realized that this could be a big thing for me. I still am adjusting to bigger things more and more but also like when I started meeting my listeners and connecting with them, that really set in for me.

EE: What is your producing process like?

SW: It’s really different depending on the song. Sometimes I start with Melodies and then I write the lyrics, or the other way around. It just really depends on the song.

EE: How would you describe the type of music you make?

SW: I don’t know if there’s a name for that. I don’t really want to be known for a specific niche I just want to have room to experiment with different things but also I think my music is distinctive too..

EE: Who inspires you in the music industry?

SW: tana definitely. He’s very genuine and does this kind of work because he loves it. He doesn’t just bend to profit. I feel like a lot of people in the industry can fall into doing things that they don’t really enjoy.

EE: I totally agree with you. Doing something because you truly love it is so important. Let’s talk about your live shows. What has been your favorite performance you’ve done?

SW: I played a song at my friend KDs show last year around this time and that was my first time experiencing a crowd of my listeners and the energy they brought. That was an experience I will always remember.
