Champagne Supernovas by Maureen Callahan
Champagne Supernovas by Maureen Callahan is a fashioned book for the ages. It dives into the glamour of the 90s through the lens of three characters of the times– Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen. I rate it 5 out of 5 because it is a breezy, fresh, and beautiful read that any fashion lover or 90s nostalgic will enjoy deeply.
This book felt like talking to a friend but the friend who has all the gossip. It covers many different aspects of the fashion industry and life in it like youth culture of the time, drug addiction, love and loss, and fame. Callahan connects different designers like Calvin Klein, Isaac Mizrahi, and Perry Ellis into this maze of fashion that they all participate in. She uses the stories and lives of Moss and her modeling, Jacobs and his designing, and McQueen also with his designing to show the truth about what really went on under the clothes and behind the catwalk.
“Kate, Marc, and McQueen helped create a world where older women want the approval of younger women, while the younger women hope to become like the older ones, and where the lowbrow is as desirable as the high. Aspiration, now, goes both ways.” Callahan wrote about their flaws as human beings honestly and I admire that in this book. It shows the human side of fashion and how models and designers alike are just like us.
