How To Study Fashion As A Teen

As a teenager, you may think your potential is stumped. People will either tell you that your mind will change or that you just can't do it. You can't start a brand. You can’t design clothes. You can’t build a business. You're too young, too incompetent, too inaccessible. I am here to tell you that you are not too young. You are not too incompetent, you are not too not accessible. You are more capable now than ever. In these trying times of quarantine, creativity and ambition practically floats in the air. One of the hardest parts of being interested in fashion as a teen is that you don't know where to start. Let’s say you are eager to learn about the industry, but fashion tracks back to the end of time. The industry is so vast that you can't just drop right in the middle. Well I am here to help you start studying fashion, you can do any of these in the car, on a boat, or even in the comfort of your own room.

Starting off with the obvious. Watch fashion shows. Watch em, day or night. You need to watch fashion shows. Just type it right into the search bar on youtube and a stream of endless shows will pop up and leave you a little bit teary eyed from the beauty. Disclaimer: if you do not enjoy watching fashion shows and if the upbeat model music makes you a bit antsy, well this may not be for you. Youtube channels like FF Chanel, Loic Pregent, and any top designer channel will have tons of fashion content and behind the scenes looks into the building and works of the shows. My favorite shows this season so far have been the Versace Fall Winter 2020 show, Burberry Fall Winter 2020 show, and Iris van Herpen Hypnosis show. I have realized more and more about the industry just by watching only a couple of these shows. Many of the trends we see on the high fashion runways get reflected back into mainstream brands like Forever21 and Urban Outfitters. By watching fashion shows, it allows one to truly visualize each look and also embrace the creativity of others.

My next recommendation is to start browsing through free online courses to take over fashion. By doing this, you are gaining more knowledge about the industry and begin to learn the logistics of running a brand or building a business. Most of these courses do incorporate a lot of online reading so be prepared. If you are looking for an easy and affordable way to reach these sources try Coursera, Skillshare, or Udemy to access free online learning about fashion. If money doesn't seem to be a problem and you are wanting to learn from the experts try Masterclass and begin shuffling through the fashion courses. These masterclasses include icons like Anna Wintour and Tom Ford who take you through a step by step of each of their unique creative processes.

My last tip/trick to help you start studying fashion NOW is to create. Create new pieces, start styling videos, build lookbooks. Just start doing more of what you enjoy most about fashion. I started teaching myself how to stretch and adequately start building looks and taking them to my sewing machine. So I encourage each and everyone of you young designers, buyers, and marketers to start learning more NOW.
